Revenue growth

The key figures for the 2021 edition are based on data from the Main Software 50 companies for fiscal year 2020. The total revenue of the 50 companies in the ranking increased even during the pandemic. Total revenue at the end of fiscal year 2020 was 409.8 million euros, which represents a 23% increase over the revenue the companies recorded at the end of 2019.

Employment and productivity

The total number of FTEs at the end of 2020 was 3,262. This represents a 16% increase in the number of employees of the Main Software 50 companies over the year 2020. Revenue per FTE averaged EUR 126.000 and increased by 6% in 2020 compared to 2019. Interestingly, the productivity of the Main Software 50 companies has increased with about 20% since the first measurement in 2012.

International success

Some 30% of total sales are generated abroad: 21% are collected within Europe, 9% in the rest of the world. International sales have been steadily increasing for several years. In 2012 it amounted to only 19%. This shows the increasing international scalability of Dutch software companies.

Recurring revenue and profitability

Although the composition of the ranking changes every year, a clear trend is visible with regard to the recurring revenue and EBITDA. Over the years we see a steady increase in the recurring revenue level. In the 2021 edition, 75% of sales are recurring, up from only 54% in 2012. Also, for ten years, the Main Software 50 has seen an increase in the share of companies with a high profit margin (over 10%). In the 2021 edition, 78% of Main Software 50 companies achieved an EBITDA of more than 10%, whereas ten years ago it was only 50%.

Impact of corona pandemic

With revenue, profit, headcount and productivity increasing over 2020, the covid pandemic seems to have had little impact on software companies. However, we do see reduced investment in R&D in 2020. 82% of companies spent more than 10% of revenue on R&D, down from 92% the year before. We also see that the confidence in future revenue growth has returned to the same level as before corona: this year 58% of companies expect to grow more than 20%. Last year this was still 42%.
